News!

Dear Parents,

It continues to be a busy time in Room 156! We are right into the Deep Freeze so what better way to begin an art lesson on snow and winter!!
Last week the children did an art project using popcorn to depict snow on a winter scene. It turned out quite well and the children certainly enjoyed eating while they were working!

In language we are continuing with our guided reading groups each week. I have also introduced DEAR time which is Drop Everything and Read. We have this each day right after lunch for 15 to 20 minutes. While the children are reading I have one or two students at a time come up and read with me. It gives me even more time over the reading groups, to help keep me abreast of how the children are progressing. We learned about synonyms last week and this week we are focusing on antonyms. As well, we are continuing to focus on proofreading and editing in our written work.
We will be learning about the use of media advertising and how it affects our life. We will look at marketing strategies of the cereal companies, including features and gimmicks that we see and read on the box. I would like each child to bring in a cereal box from home and we will be creating our own brand of cereal.
Please have these into school by Monday of next week.

In Math we finished our unit on time with a test. The children did very well, even though the part on elapsed time was more challenging. We have been learning about 2 dimensional shapes which will be followed by a unit on money and making change to the dollar.

In Social Studies we are continuing with our Family Traditions/Celebrations. We have also been learning about mapping skills and how it all relates to Canada and the world at large.

In Science we are nearing the end of our Simple Machines unit. Our next unit will be on Air and Water. Scientist in the School will be on the morning of February 15th. I will need at least four parent volunteers to help out that morning. Please contact Susan O'Reilly or Jane Taylor if you are avilable to help out.

I will be sending home skating forms this week as we have skating times booked on Wednesday, Feb. 2nd and again on Wednesday, Feb.16th. We are scheduled right after lunch from 12:45 to 1:45pm and are skating with Ms. Van Schoor's class. Again if you can be of assistance we always need extra hands for tying up skates and hot chocolate with marshmallows. Please get in touch with our grade Moms if you are available.

If you have any questions please come and see me anytime.
Thank you again for your continued support and time.

Mrs. Seitz
