Dear Parents,
For the next little while we will be working on a unit in Nelson Language Arts, called Media Works.
This unit is about different kinds of messages. Children will have opportunities to learn more about media and will create media messages of their own. We will be working with our Reading Buddies on this topic. Please ensure that your child has brought in their cereal box by Friday.
What Will We Be Reading?
- an advertising jingle
- information
- photographs
- a news story
What Will They Be learning?
This unit gives your child the opportunity to:
- think about messages in advertising, postcards, pictures, and news stories
- think and talk about media messages
- practise reading skills
- make lists, webs, and charts to record information
- make a picture and a caption to tell a news story or make up their own advertisement about something they are interested in promoting
How You Can Help At Home
Look at news photographs in newspapers and magazines with your child, and read the captions together. Talk about the information they give.
When you are watching television with your child, discuss some of the commercials. Invite your child to think about who made the commercial, and what they want people to think or do.
When you are out driving or walking, have your child look for "media messages"- for example, signs, posters, billboards, slogans on clothing, bumper stickers, and advertising on buses or benches. Talk about the messages.
Always remember to ask questions about the information the messages give; the 5 W's- who, what, where, when and why.
Thank you for helping to make this experience a fun and exciting learning opportunity.
Mrs. Seitz
PS. If you have any interesting media you would like to send in with your child please do!
