News from Room 156

Dear Parents,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for coming out for the interviews. It was a pleasure to meet with you and discuss your child's progress. Thank you as well for your flexibility with the times. I know this is a busy time of year for all of us.
November has flown by and the children have really come a long way in working together as a group. I am proud of their accomplishment in this area.
In Language, we are moving along with the guided reading and writing. The children did a terrific job in their writing on Remembrance Day. I felt that they really had an appreciation of what this day meant. Some of the reading groups are reading short novels, while others are reading from the Nelson Anthologies. I would encourage you to continue reading with your child at night. They are often tired after a full day at school and various activities. If this is the case it is still important to read to them.
In Math, we have spent a lot of time learning about number facts to 20 in both addition and subtraction. I have been teaching the children different strategies on how to reach their answer, either in addition or subtraction. We had our first math test last week on numbers and numeration, and we are now learning about patterns with different attributes. We will then be moving on to time.
In Science, the children have thoroughly enjoyed our experiments on Liquids and Solids. We will be having a test at the end of the week on Liquids and Solids and the children will be bringing home their notebooks mid week to study for this.
In Social Studies, we continue to work on special celebrations and traditions. We will be learning about the Christian Christmas, Kawanza, and Hanukkah.

Our Christmas craft day will be on Dec. 15th and the Christmas concert is on Dec. 14th. Federation Day is on Dec. 9th, so there will be no school on that day.
I am decorating our classroom for Christmas. I have put up a few things and if you have any decorations that you would like to contribute to our class, it would be greatly appreciated. The children are all getting excited with the anticipation of the Elf on the Shelf that I put up each year. I love this time of the year with the children. It is so much fun to be involved in their world at this time of year with all their wonder, excitement and joy.

On Wednesday of this week, we are taking time to reflect on children in Africa who are much less fortunate than our children. The Seeds of Hope group are asking that the children wear black and bring in a small donation that will go toward building a medical kit. The children and I have spent some time on discussing this and I know that it is difficult for them to fully appreciate the whole concept of how these African children have no voice to speak for them.
This also brings me around to thanking you so much for your generous contributions to the gifts for the Stonegate gift basket. This is easier for the children to grasp as they actually see the basket growing for the family we are giving to. If you have any gently used clothing for four and six year olds, I thought we could add that to the basket as
well.
For those of you who have bought books from our Scholastic, thanks you as well. This allows me to purchase books and learning materials for the children to have in the
classroom.

In closing, I appreciate all that you do to help assist in our classroom program. I am very fortunate to have parents come in and help out and volunteer. It makes such a difference in every way.
Thank you again for your continued thoughtfulness and support.

Mrs. Seitz
