News and Catch Up

Dear Parents,

There has been a problem with my Blog recently, so I haven't been able to erase the Upcoming Events and add new posts. Hopefully I will be able to get this rectified soon.

First I would like to thank all of you for coming out to interviews last week. It was good to meet with you and discuss your child's progress. I appreciate your support and input.

I would also like to thank those of you who have been sending in gifts for our single Mom and her little girl. It is such a worthwhile cause and so meaningful at this time of year. We still need some books and a doll for this little one and I would like to contribute a few articles of clothing for Mom and the child. I think we would be safe with a size 7/8 for the little girl and we are trying to find out the size for Mom. Canned and boxed goods as well as grocery gift certificates are also very helpful to this single Mom. We have discussed as a class the spirit of giving and how we can make a difference in this family's life.

In Language, we are continuing to focus on proper sentence structure and spelling. As well, we have been working on nouns, verbs, and on adjectives. Proofreading and the checking of spelling is an area all the children need to work on.

We are continuing to read our "classics" and learn what is involved in what constitutes a book report. Thank you to Nicholas deVilla-Choi for bringing in so many books for us. The library has ordered some classics in and hopefully they will be here soon. We will be starting to read from the Nelson anthologies next week. The children worked hard on their Witches novel study and did quite a good job. I am encourageing the children to look back through the story to find the information that they need to answer a question. I am also trying to teach them to refer to the question and use the words from the question, to help them write their answer in a complete sentence.

In math we are continuing to work on number facts and the different strategies we use to get the answer. I am sending home their math books for the weekend with homework on addition fact strategies. Next week we will be working more on subtraction. Every day after lunch, I will be giving the children a quick addition test that lasts for a minute. It is called Mad Minute Math. This is to help the children learn their addtion and substraction facts. I will continue to send home some work sheets on this so you can practise at home as well.

In science we have started a new unit on movement, structures and mechanisms.

In social studies we are continuing to learn about the different celebrations around the world. Next week we will be learning about Hanukkah.
